Read the equation
This equality constrains the emotional weights in the Message formula to add to one. It fixes their combined scale, so changing the allocation among pain points need not change the total assigned weight. If each weight is nonnegative, the weights can be read as shares of a whole and M becomes a weighted average of the pain-point quantities. The equality alone also permits negative weights, so it does not by itself impose individual bounds or guarantee that M stays within the range of its inputs.

Terms & definitions
| Term | Meaning in this source |
|---|---|
| w_i | Emotional weight of pain point i. |
| i | Index over the pain points included in the Message component. |
| Σ_i | Sum over all the included weights. |
| 1 | The required total weight. |
How it works
Take the same weights w_i used in the Message sum M=Σ_i w_i·p_i.
Add the weights across all included pain points.
Check that their total equals one. Check nonnegativity separately if interpreting them as shares or using a weighted-average range.
Assumptions & limits
The poster’s normalization condition does not state bounds or nonnegativity for individual weights.
